Design Technology

The Technology Department at Southgate School is an energetic and vibrant place to work and study. You will find the staff enthusiastic, knowledgeable and very helpful.  The department aims to create an environment that provides exciting stimuli for students of all ages, abilities and cultures, giving a broad and balanced approach to Design and Technology with a special attention to “hands on” experience across a wide range of practical activities.

The projects are designed to target specific skill sets and tasks are open in nature to allow pupils to have more influence over the direction of their work. The projects allow pupils to use their creativity, imagination and problem solving skills to design and make products within a variety of contexts for a range of intended users.

The curriculum covers Electronics, Resistant Materials, Graphics design, Food Technology and Textiles.  Child Development is offered at KS4.  At KS5 there is Product Design, which has been a popular choice for a number of years. All exams at KS4/5 are linked to the AQA specifications.

The department offers GCSE Food and Nutrition and GCSE Design and Technology as well as GCSE Child Development as part of students Key Stage 4 options.

In the Technology Department at Southgate, students take great pride in their work and this is demonstrated through successes at GCSE and A levels.  We look forward to sharing our success with you.
