The PTI Subject Leadership Mark

Posted on: November 3rd 2020

We are proudly announcing that the Prince’s Teaching Institute has awarded the Modern Foreign Languages Department at Southgate School the “PTI Subject Leadership Mark” for a second consecutive year! This award, which we have gained in 2019 and in 2020, recognises our valuable teamwork in:

  • Increasing challenge in the curriculum
  • Enthusing pupils with activities beyond the curriculum
  • Developing the staff’s own specialist subject knowledge
  • Developing subject-based links outside school

The PTI’s motto “Inspiring teachers, changing lives” has been the driving force for us to join this project. The Prince’s Teaching Institute passionately believes that “the key to excellent education is exceptional teaching” and we certainly believe this too at Southgate School and in particular in the MFL department. Some of the institute’s ambassadors such as Juliet Stevenson, Stephen Fry and Sir Patrick Stewart (to name a few!) speak a language that resonates with us: great teaching and teachers inspire young people to achieve amazing things now and later on in their lives.

In the last 2 years, Miss Errami, one of our MFL teachers, has liaised with the PTI on this project. She has promoted all the wonderful work that the MFL teachers do in the department. The Prince’s Teaching Institute have been highly impressed with our passion to teaching and our relentless approach to making languages teaching interesting, innovative and challenging for our young people. From increasing challenge in our lessons from Year 7, to having a professional theatre company perform a play in Spanish, running inspiring trips, working with the Art department on cross-curricular projects and using French and Spanish music and films in our lessons, we have aspired to making languages satisfying to learn.

The MFL department will continue to work with the PTI for a third and final year to complete the whole project.
