We are committed to ensuring that our students understand the importance of positive social, emotional, mental health and well-being (SEMH).
Students are able to access support in a variety of ways during their time at Southgate school. This could include support from their Form Tutor, Head of Year, Pastoral Support Officers and Learning Mentors. Students are taught during PSHE about how to keep themselves well, both physically and emotionally. We have a House system and students are encouraged to participate in activities to achieve milestones in order to promote positive well-being. At Southgate school we understand that student achievement and progress is closely linked to their emotional wellbeing and how they feel about themselves. We consider it crucial to support and develop the whole child and not only their academic being.
Support at Southgate School
Our ‘Be Well Zones’ are safe places for all our students, particularly the more vulnerable in our school community. Within school we are clear that ‘its ok to not be ok’ and students know that they can share their concerns without fear of judgement.
Our ‘Be Well Zones’ are located in the Student Support Centre (SSC where our Learning Mentors are based), N15 (Pastoral Support Office), W13 (Heads of Year office) and W22 (Pastoral Support Manager and Attendance Officer office). Students can access support before school, during break, lunch and after school.
Our Student Support Centre runs a variety of interventions including targeted group-work across all year groups. These include Nurture group; Attendance workshops; Self-esteem; Sleep; Anxiety and Exam Stress management. Our Learning Mentors are an integral part of the Pastoral Team and work very closely with Heads of Year to ensure that all students are fully supported.
We also work very closely with the following agencies:
- CAMHS – Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (referral through GP)
- SBSS – Secondary Behaviour Support Services
- COMPASS – Drug and Alcohol Services
- Safer Schools Officer – PC Blake
- CSE – Child Sexual Exploitation Team
- School Nurse
- EWS – Education Welfare Service
- School Counsellor
