Posted on: December 21st 2017

In the final week of the autumn term, Southgate School became the Year 9 Boys Borough Basketball Champions 2017-18. In an intense week of basketball, the team beat Ark John Keats in the semi-final on Monday to qualify for the final against Edmonton County two days later. The final was a very close affair with Edmonton County racing out to a convincing lead in the 1st quarter, only for Southgate to claw back 8 points in the 2nd quarter. The lead changed hands regularly in the second half and when the buzzer went at the end o the game, the scores were tied.

Five minutes of overtime followed, during which time both teams scored a single basket. With 10 seconds to go in the game, George Kalatzis was fouled in the act of shooting. He scored the first of his shots to take the lead to one point, which left 7 seconds for Edmonton to score a basket to win the game. Thanks to some improvised scramble defence, the final Edmonton shot missed and Southgate won by a single point 33-32.

The team now go on to represent the Borough of Enfield in the London Youth Games 2018.
