Southgate School

Film Studies & Media

The Media Department at Southgate is a dynamic and enthusiastic team within the School whose specialist teachers draw on their wealth of industrial experience including Pinewood Studios, National Film and TV School and Heart Radio amongst others, to deliver innovative schemes of work, which inspire and encourage students to achieve the highest levels of academic achievement.

Courses are structured to encourage students to explore the ever expanding and complex world of the media, by making full use of the green screen studio, editing suite and recording studio within the School to develop an understanding of media theory and an ability to apply this theory in a practical way. Our courses develop skills in communication, team working, problem solving, analysis, leadership, independent thinking, skills which prepare students for university study, professional courses and a variety of careers.

At Key Stage 5 we offer GCE A Level Film Studies (Eduqas) with all students consistently achieving A-C grades year on year. Our other Key stage 5 offering is The Cambridge Technical Diploma in Media (OCR) – a double award worth 2 A Level grades, which offers a specialist pathways in TV and film. The department and its candidates consistently achieve 90 – 100% A*-A grades each year.

The Media Department is a successful department which offers students a range of enrichment activities including peer to peer, Film Challenge Days, Bring a Parent to School, Southgate Media Oscars, external talks, visits to Warner Bros Studio, the BFI and BBFC.

Perhaps the best advocates of the benefits of a media studies qualification are our Alumni, of which we are especially proud. Many have gone on to higher studies at Universities including Bournemouth, Westminster, Hertfordshire and Ravensbourne College. Students have also gained employment within film and TV, publishing, advertising, IT and PR industries, some have also worked as independent filmmakers, event managers and on the broadcasting of the Olympics.

The Media Department is an evolving creative environment, which looks to enrich students’ education through innovative teaching and learning practices, taking pride in the strong academic practical achievement of our students we continue to innovate to maintain excellence in the delivery of the curriculum.
