Packing Shopping Bags for Homeless Action in Barnet

Posted on: December 16th 2016

Southgate School organised their first charity event of this academic year, on Tuesday 13th December, in partnership with Asda Southgate Circus. Ten representatives of the Year 8 and 9 School Council packed the shopping bags of many kind and generous Asda customers.

The event was a success! The students collected the sum of £300.18 . All monies will be donated to Homeless Action in Barnet. An in-school collection is continuing this week where the whole Southgate School will be able to donate and contribute to this noble cause.

Why collecting for homeless people and more specifically for Homeless Action Barnet?

On Monday 12th December, when students presented their project to the Senior Management Team, it was clear that they felt strongly about having a more active role in their local community. The students made the audience reflects on how much we take for granted having a warm bed and eating three meals a day, when at our foot step people sleep rough. Their message to the community is that the students at Southgate School might be young but they are aware, they feel and they care.

Alex said, ‘Customers were really kind and I believe we portrayed ourselves really well by being friendly, helpful and polite. Even if the customers did not need our help, they still donated and it made me feel so great to potentially be able to give a bed and food to local people in need.’

Victoria and Edna added, ‘Although it was tiring, the feeling of achieving something greater than you made us forget about ourselves.’

Maddie concluded by saying, ‘Helping our local community is something we can all do. I truly enjoyed giving up my time to help others.’

Ms Beedar and Ms Bouhraoua want to say a very special thank you to Maddie, Natalia, Selena, Victoria, Edna, John-Luca, Loucas, Kayann, George, Andreas and our photographer, Alex for having been the true ambassadors of Southgate School.

Thank you to Ms Allen from Asda Southgate Circus for helping us to organise this event.

Also, thank you to all the students who are continuing the donation within the school, this week.
