Southgate School's Production of 'The Wizard of Oz'

Posted on: January 29th 2024

The Wizard of Oz is yet another wonderful school production from the Drama department (with a live musical accompaniment organised by our Music department). This well-known tale has been adapted for schools and our talented budding thespians were able to throw themselves into their roles, with a constant whirl of singing, humour and a particularly wicked witch who made our primary school visitors and some older members of the audience, gasp at her evil plans and frightening appearance! Fortunately, the White Witch (resplendent in a remarkable costume that certainly had the ‘wow!’ factor) was able to help Dorothy overcome the dastardly schemes of the wicked witch so that she and her new-found friends – the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow – were able to finally meet the Wizard of Oz.

These occasions are always a joy to watch. It is events such as the school productions that students will remember for years to come and the fact that they, and the musicians, are able to perform in front of a large and enthusiastic audience, is nothing less than they deserve for their hard work.

In 35 years of teaching, I have attended numerous hugely enjoyable productions across 7 different schools, but what marks Southgate’s production of The Wizard of Oz out, as is the case with all previous productions, is the remarkably high quality of performance by the students, the quality of the props and costumes and the quality of the supporting band. I do have to acknowledge the very significant time that staff put into making such shows happen, but there is enormous pleasure in seeing all that hard work come together and the students enjoying themselves so much!
