School Closure - Thursday 2nd March 2023

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Day 2 of National Industrial Action and Southgate School

Despite the ongoing talks between the government and representatives of the National Education Union (NEU) which we hope will lead to a resolution of the current impasse, we are expecting as per my letter of 26th January, a second day of Industrial action by NEU members on Thursday March 2nd.

However, whatever happens on Thursday, Year 11 students will be expected in school to sit their maths mock exam which will begin as scheduled, at 8.40am.

If the strike is cancelled, Year 11 will still have their maths mock in the morning and lessons as normal for the rest of the day. All other year groups will be in as normal. If, as seems likely, the strike does go ahead then please note the following information:

School Closure on Thursday March 2nd Years 7-10

We have reluctantly taken the decision to close the school on the above dates, to all students except for Year 11 students (for the maths mock exam only) and those who require a particular level of support and children in Year 7 whose parents are key workers.

We are having to restrict the potential numbers of these students simply because we do not expect many staff in school and we do not want to be in a situation where we have too many students for us to manage safely.

The school will contact parents of students who require a particular level of support.

If you are a Key Worker of a child in Year 7 and it is essential for you to work and if therefore you intend to send your child into school, please email office@southgate.enfield.sch.uk. You will need to provide the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your child’s name and form
  • Your occupation
  • Full address of your workplace
  • Contact number for your workplace
  • Your mobile number
  • Confirmation of any medical needs of your child so we can check records and retrieve medicine if necessary

We will need this information by 9.00am on Wednesday 1st March.

Any child who comes in to school on this day will have to bring their own packed lunch.

Expectations of work during closure

All students have been given information about work on the days of our closure. This information

can also be found on our website. Your child should have their logins for different online portals, however, in the event that they are experiencing difficulty they should email general IT support via: ictsupport@southgate.enfield.sch.uk

It is likely that your child will have some work to do via Satchel:one but teachers taking industrial action are not required to set work for the classes they would normally teach. On the days of school closure it is also a good opportunity for all Key Stage 3 students to do additional reading as this will support their learning generally.

The school will re-open as normal, on Friday 3rd March.

Hopefully there will be a resolution to this dispute so that we can complete the rest of term without further disruption.

Yours sincerely

Mr. Martin Lavelle

Headteacher
