Southgate School's Production of Oliver

Posted on: February 5th 2026

January began with a bang when our production of Oliver! finally arrived.

With a huge, wonderful cast of 46 students, 10 students in the band and a further 16 students working backstage it is no wonder that it was such a hit.  Rehearsals began in September, and this dedicated bunch went from strength to strength, mastering the choreography and songs for the numerous musical numbers as well as the blocking for the scenes. Our fabulous cast slowly brought the world of the play and its characters to life with their wonderful use of facial expressions, mannerisms and voice, immersing us in 1800’s London.  The ensemble did a marvelous job of switching seamlessly between Fagin’s gang, boys from the orphanage and street sellers. They not only supported the principal roles but were also integral to the storytelling and fun. The Sowerberry’s, Noah and Charlotte brought a grotesque, humorous addition to the performance, as did Widow Corney with her infectious laugh.  There was the incredible, powerful voice from Mr. Bumble; the terrifying stares and stage-presence from Sykes, the cheekiness from Dodger and the sweet, beautiful songs from Oliver. Nancy struck a wonderful balance between joyful and melancholy with Bet making a fabulous sidekick. Fagin’s commanding presence during ‘Reviewing the Situation’ was memorable to say the least and the comical appearance of the Matron and Old Sally ensured that Oliver was destined to remain with his real family. Of course, the kindness shown by Mr. Brownlow, Mrs. Bedwin and Dr Grimwig towards Oliver resulted in the show ending happily after all.   The band were incredibly talented and committed, working together seamlessly to learn and perform a vast amount of very difficult music.  Through their expert playing they created a variety of atmospheres from melancholy to joy, from menacing to comical.  Supporting the whole production was our backstage crew, who were busy working hard behind the scenes to ensure a smooth run of all the performances.

Needless to say, we are incredibly proud of their achievements and are deeply thankful to the Drama and Music Departments for all of their hard work and dedication.

We would also like to thank all the staff involved, with their help backstage and for promoting the show. The Southgate PTA for providing refreshments and our wonderful audiences. It was a joy to have so many people come to support the show and our students and to share in celebrating all of their hard work.
